Jimmy Lai and the stand for what one believes in

I recommend this documentary: The Hong Konger. Released yesterday by the Acton Institute, it's a documentary about Jimmy Lai, Hong Kong billionaire who literally went from rags to riches -- and is willing to lose everything to stand for the truth.

Jimmy Lai, a convert to Catholicism, could easily have left Hong Kong when it became clear that with the handover to mainland China and the CCP, his liberties and his fortune would be taken away. Perhaps because he is preternaturally adventurous, having stowed away from the mainland at age 12 and made his fortune in the "Fragrant Harbor," perhaps because his personality is both stubborn and deeply moral, he refuses to stop speaking out about the loss of freedom and what it means for the human spirit.

This documentary has some gaps, but remains a moving story of Jimmy Lai's life and a good introduction to the history of Hong Kong and its fate as a British colony and then a troublesome thorn in the side of the Chinese Communist Party, which has chosen to stifle its vigor and democratic system with oppressive laws and raw acts of power.

These days it's not easy to find good material for young people so that they can become acquainted with current events. The Hong Konger is suitable for teens as well as adults, and I think it's important that everyone watch it -- not only for its educational value but for an introduction to a man of integrity and courage.

  1. Thanks so much for posting this. I had been waiting for this documentary to be released and found out, thanks to your Twitter post, that it was out. Our family lived over in Hong Kong for a short time and it saddens me to see what has happened all to quickly. I agree that everyone needs to see this. Already forwarded the link to our college student and plan to have our home schooled high schoolers watch it. It shows how easily people’s freedom can be taken away and how vigilant we must be preserve our freedom and speak out when any authority attempts to abridge these God-given rights. Praying for Jimmy Lai and his family.
